It started in the’50’s. The situation is actually improving but there’s still s lot of dying trees. The campsites at mt mitchell used to be very secluded, each surrounded by the balsam trees, but there were so many trees dying they cut them down and everything is very exposed now. Been camping up there since the’80’s. Absolutely love it.
